Detrital garnet petrology challenges Paleoproterozoic ultrahigh-pressure metamorphism in western Greenland

چکیده

Abstract. Modern-style plate tectonics is characterised by the global operation of cold and deep subduction involving blueschist facies ultrahigh-pressure metamorphism. This has been a common process since Neoproterozoic, but couple studies indicate similar processes were active in Paleoproterozoic, at least on local scale. Particularly conspicuous are extreme conditions ∼ 7 GPa thermal gradients < 150 ∘C GPa−1 proposed for metamorphic rocks Nordre Strømfjord shear zone western part Paleoproterozoic Nagssugtoqidian Orogen Greenland. By acquiring large dataset heavy minerals (n = 52 130) garnet major-element composition integrated with mineral inclusion analysis (n=2669) from modern sands representing fresh naturally mixed erosional material rocks, we here intensely screened area potential occurrences put constraints evolution. Apart absence any indications pointing to low-temperature–high-pressure metamorphism, results well accordance subduction–collision evolution along Barrovian-type intermediate temperature pressure gradient peak amphibolite–granulite–eclogite-facies transition medium- high-pressure granulite-facies conditions. In addition, discuss that all “evidence” metamorphism literature this equivocal. Accordingly, not an example modern-style or very low general.

Early Proterozoic ultrahigh pressure metamorphism: evidence from microdiamonds.

Microdiamonds from the Akluilâk minette dykes (Nunavut, Canada) are similar to diamonds formed in subducted metamorphic rocks. High concentrations of unaggregated nitrogen and positive delta(15)N suggest that the microdiamonds formed within rocks subducted to ultrahigh pressures before being sampled by the minette magma 1.8 billion years ago. This ultrahigh pressure metamorphism in North Americ...

Paleoproterozoic high-pressure metamorphism in the northern North China Craton and implications for the Nuna supercontinent

The connection between the North China Craton (NCC) and contiguous cratons is important for the configuration of the Nuna supercontinent. Here we document a new Paleoproterozoic high-pressure (HP) complex dominated by garnet websterite on the northern margin of the NCC. The peak metamorphism of the garnet websterite was after ∼1.90 Ga when it was subducted to eclogite facies at ∼2.4 GPa, then e...

Two upward-deepening stratigraphic packages are preserved, each 18 characterized by peritidal precipitates at the base and iron formation a...

Discrete ultrahigh-pressure domains in the Western Gneiss Region, Norway: implications for formation and exhumation

New eclogite localities and new Ar/Ar ages within the Western Gneiss Region of Norway define three discrete ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) domains that are separated by distinctly lower pressure, eclogite facies rocks. The sizes of the UHP domains range from c. 2500 to 100 km; if the UHP culminations are part of a continuous sheet at depth, the Western Gneiss Region UHP terrane has minimum dimensions...
